Former Indonesian national team coach Shin Tae-yong has spoken out in response to reports that he will return to coaching the Indonesian national team after being sacked by K-League 1 club Ulsan HD.
Shin Tae-yong made these comments during an exclusive interview with South Korean media outlet KBS. In his statement, STY touched on his greatest achievements while coaching the Indonesian national team.
This achievement is related to the South Korean coach's success in leading the Garuda Squad to defeat Saudi Arabia (2-0) and hold Australia (0-0) in the third round of the 2026 World Cup Asian Zone Qualifiers.
"I think my failure was due to my lack of understanding of the club's internal affairs. However, I completely disagree with the criticism that my tactics didn't work in the K League," said STY, as quoted by KBS.
"People keep belittling my experience in Indonesia, but how could a team ranked 127th in FIFA beat Saudi Arabia or draw with Australia? That's nonsense," he added.
In the final part of the exclusive interview, Shin Tae-yong not only expressed his gratitude to the Ulsan HD fans for their support during his time in charge.
The former South Korean national team coach at the 2018 World Cup also concluded the interview by clarifying rumors that he was being linked with a return to the Indonesian national team.
"I was very impressed by their incredible support during away matches. I always think it would be nice for the players to return their support, even if only a little," he said.
"I really want to express my gratitude. Furthermore, I want to emphasize that the recent rumors about his appointment to return to Indonesia are completely false," continued the Yeongdeok-born coach.
